There are two simple tests.
| Our maternal mtDNA test lets you trace your ancestry back through your mother's line. |
| Our paternal Y-chromosome test lets you trace your ancestry back through your father's line. |
It's entirely up to you which one you want to trace – mother, father, or both.
If you are male, you can take either DNA test yourself. If you are female, you can take the maternal test yourself. But you’ll have to ask a male relative like your father, brother or nephew to take the paternal test for you.
Which relatives can I use? Why can’t I take a paternal Y-chromosome test myself?
How do I take the DNA test?
This is the easy part.
| 1. | Order your DNA test kit online. |
| 2. | When the kit arrives, simply take a swab of your inside cheek, place the samples in the ziplok bag provided and send it back to us. |
| 3. | Wait for your results. |
How long does it take?
Because we do everything here in Australia, we can get your results back to you quicker – normally in around 4 weeks.
What will the results tell me?
The results will tell you which haplogroup (or branch of the Homo sapiens family tree) you belong to. From that, we know where in the world your oldest ancestors originated, and roughly how long ago. We’ll be able to give you a bit of history on the geographical region too, and show you the route your forefathers and foremothers took out of Africa. Download sample report.
What will happen to my DNA?
Genetic Technologies will destroy your DNA once you have received your results.
